Saint Spas: Where land meets sky in Raduil
The “Ascension of the Lord” Chapel, affectionately known among the locals as “Sveti Spas” (Saint Saviour), is one of the highest and most spiritually uplifting places in the surroundings of the village. Situated on a picturesque hill, it seems to stand on the threshold between earth and sky, reminding visitors of the transience of life and the strength of eternal hope. As an integral part of the Raduil Holy Forest, this small chapel symbolizes spiritual elevation and the protection that the saint offers to the people of the mountains.
The path leading to the chapel passes through beautiful natural scenery, and the location itself offers one of the most impressive panoramic views of Raduil and the surrounding peaks of the Rila Mountains. Its architecture is simple and modest, in harmony with the spirit of the mountain landscape, yet its interior is filled with warmth and humility. The local residents take great care in maintaining it, turning it into a welcoming refuge for every traveler seeking a moment of silence and prayer.
The greatest liveliness comes on Spasovden (Ascension Day), when the chapel celebrates its patron feast. On this day, the chapel fills with believers who climb up to it to pray for health and prosperity. The traditional blessing of water and the festive atmosphere under the open sky create a sense of true community unity. “Sveti Spas” remains that sacred place in the Raduil Holy Forest where one can leave their worries at the foot of the hill and look at the world with new, clearer eyes.
